House Finch

House Finches (males) are generally a nice red color bird that are fun to watch at the feedres. Occasionally I see a yellow pigmented variation, apparently due to something in their diet, or perhaps insufficient diet. I have read both reasons given. I find it odd though as I have a flock of house finches including at least two yellow males. I have to imagine they all share same/similar diets and at my feders at least the yellow chaps are easily as aggressive as any bird there. Its a mystery...

House Finch

A House Finch dosn't know which feeder is best until he tries them all....

House Finch

Garden stats for our House Finches are quite interesting. The birds only entered the Houston Area about 15-25 years ago. Normally considered resident, the chart shows that my friends disperse in the fall, both numbers and frequency of visits fall precipitously in September. We are on the Gulf Coast, where do they go? Numbers build in winter and spring and with fledging show a marked increase in May-June.
