Downy Woodpeckers have been an occasional part of the garden life for years and when I began feeding birds last summer I certainly wished to attract them with a suet feeder. For nearly 9 months they have ignored and/or avoided the garden and its alluring suet. Now for the past month a Red-Bellied Woodpecker couple have begun enjoying this feast. Jealous perhaps, or just by chance, our Downy friend has finally discovered the table. Bonne appetite!
Garden stats on our downy woodpeckers. Never abundant, generally one induvudual at a time. He/she/they are most common in summer probably because of available suet to feed youngsters.
